On 15-16 March 2004, Pakistan opener Kiran Baluch scored 242 runs in the first innings of a Test match against the West Indies at the National Stadium in Karachi, Pakistan. She faced 488 balls in her 9-hr 44-min innings and scored 152 runs in boundaries (38 fours). Baluch also holds the record for the most runs scored by a player in a Test match (female) – 264 – after making 22 runs in Pakistan’s second innings in Karachi.
Despite Baluch’s heroics and the West Indies being forced to follow on with a first-innings deficit of 279 runs, the four-day match was drawn.
As of 7 January 2021, no woman had come close to matching Kiran Baluch’s 242 in a Test match innings, with Mithali Raj’s 214 for India in 2002 and Ellyse Perry’s 213 not out for Australia in 2017 the next highest of the seven double hundreds that have been scored in women’s Test cricket.
