The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), which was founded on 21 May 1904, instituted the first World Cup on 13 July 1930, in Montevideo, Uruguay. It is held quadrennially. Brazil has won five times, in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.
Brazil, uniquely, have taken part in all 19 finals tournaments and will be hosting the 20th World Cup in 2014. Only two other nations have entered all World Cup competitions (if considering the qualifying games), France and the USA although the USA withdrew in 1938 without playing a match. The closest rival to Brazil is Italy with four trophies to their name followed by Germany with three titles.
