The most Stanley cup wins by a team is 24 by the Montreal Canadiens who won the cup in 1916, 1924, 1930-31, 1944, 1946, 1953, 1956-60, 1965-6, 1968-9, 1971, 1973, 1976-9, 1986, 1993, from a record 32 finals. The Stanley Cup was first presented in 1893 (original cost $48.67) by Lord Stanley of Preston, then Governor-General of Canada. From 1894 it was contested by amateur teams for the Canadian Championship. From 1910 it became the award for the winners of the professional league play-offs.
