The first aircraft to be given an "X-plane" designation was the Bell X-1, built from 1944–45 and first flown on 19 Jan 1946. This project represented the first time the US Air Force had ordered the construction of a purely experimental design, with no plans to develop it into a front-line aircraft. For this reason its model identifier was prefixed with the letter X (for experimental), rather than F (for fighter) or B (for bomber).
