The most gold medals won by at the World Judo Championships by a female judoka is seven, achieved by Ryoko Tani (née Tamura, Japan) in the -48 kg category between 1993 and 2007, and Tong Wen (China) in the +78 kg and Open categories between 2003 and 2011. Both also won a bronze.

Tong Wen’s gold at the 2009 World Championships was reinstated after the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned a two-year-ban imposed by the International Judo Federation following a positive clenbuterol test.
