Scotland had lacked a national men's lacrosse team since before the turn of the 19th century. It was the tragedy of the December 1988 Lockerbie disaster that sparked its revival. Many American students from Syracuse University came to Scotland in the succeeding years to pay tribute to friends lost on Pan Am 103, including their lacrosse team who expressed disappointment they couldn't play against the Scotland national team. Scottish lacrosse players put together a national team which competed in the 1990 World Championships, and went on to play memorial fixtures against Syracuse University.
