The first World Championships were held in 1984. The most individual titles is four by Petra Schaaf (Germany), 5km, 1988; 15km, 1989, 1991 and 1993. Kaya Parve (USSR) has won six titles, two individual and four relay, 1984-6, 1988. A women's World Cup began in 1988.
