The most points by a driver in a Formula One career is 3,018, achieved by Lewis Hamilton (UK) for the McLaren and Mercedes teams in 229 races from 18 March 2007 to 25 November 2018.

Hamilton won 109 points in his debut season in 2007, going on to break 1,000 points in the 2013 season, 2,000 points during the 2016 season and 3,000 points during the final race of the 2018 season in Abu Dhabi. As of the same race, only Sebastian Vettel (2,745) had also passed the 2,000-point milestone.

Points scoring systems in Formula One have changed over time, notably in 2010 when the points awarded for a race victory went up from 10 to 25. Applying the 2010–18 points scoring method (bar 2014, when points for the final GP counted double) to all drivers, Michael Schumacher would outscore Lewis Hamilton by 3,890 to 3,368.
