The world's largest bicycle garage is the Utrecht Stationstalling located at Utrecht Central Station in the Netherlands. Located beneath the plaza outside the newly-rebuilt station, this storage facility has space enough for 12,500 bikes. The facility was completed and opened to the public in stages, with the first 5,000 spaces becoming available in August 2017. The final section of the facility was opened on 19 August 2019.
The previous holder of this record was a futuristic automated bicycle storage system installed at Kasai Station in the Edogawa neighborhood of Tokyo, Japan. This system allows commuters to place their bicycles into racks that are then pulled down into silo-like underground chambers. This facility has the capacity to hold 9,400 bikes.
The Utrecht bicycle garage is designed with sloping ramps and walkways, colour coded by intended use – red floors are for people riding bicycles, grey floors are for people on foot.
