The largest cross country ski race is the annual Vasaloppet held on the first Sunday of March, the 87th edition had 15,800 starters who skied 90 km (55.9 miles) from the village of Sälen to the town of Mora, Sweden, on 6 March 2011.
Apart from the 90 km race people can take part throughout the Vasaloppet Week - in 2012 they registered 60,000 participants for the whole week. In the inaugural Vasaloppet in 1922 there were 117 finishers, by 2011 a total of 972,746 finishes had been registered.
