It looks like a GameBoy, but the innovative device created by researchers at Northwestern University and the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands, that pushes the boundaries of battery-free fun. The device is a serious experiment in the implementation of intermittent computing that is powered by harvesting all of the available free energy sources around the device. In this case, the unit uses solar power and piezoelectric power generated when the user presses any of the buttons! The Energy Aware Gaming Platform (ENGAGE) has the size and form factor of the original Game Boy and implements a low power version of the Game Boy processor and allows any popular retro game to be played straight from its original cartridge. This is the first implementation of zero external power for a leisure item and could represent the decrease of millions of used batteries in land fill.
