Yokozuna Mitsugu Akimoto (Japan), alias Chiyonofuji Mitsugu, set a record for domination of one of the six annual tournaments by winning the Kyushu Basho for eight successive years, 1981-88. He also holds the record for the most career wins, 1045 and Makunouchi (top division) wins, 807.
