Wing Commander Kenneth H Wallis (UK) flew his WA-116/F/S gyrocopter, with a 45-kW (60-hp)Franklin aero-engine, to a record speed of 193.6 km/h (120.3 mph) over a 3 km (1.86 mile) straight course at Marham, Norfolk, UK on 18 September 1986.
Augogyros are aircraft with rotors similar to helicopters, except that these rotors are entirely unpowered. They typically have no wings (or very small ones) and have a separate source of forward propulsion, such as a propeller or a jet engine. As the autogiro is moved forward by this power source the passing air turns the rotors (in much the same way that wind turns windmills) and provides lift.
