Highest helicopter landing
- Who
- Didier Delsalle
- Where
- Not Applicable
- When
- 14 May 2005
The highest altitude at which a helicopter has taken off and landed is 8,848 m (29,029 ft), by Didier Delsalle (France) flying a Eurocopter AS 350 B3 at the summit of Mt Everest on 14 May 2005. The very thin air at such extreme altitudes makes it extremely difficult for helicopters to stay airborne, and nearly impossible for them to carry significant cargoes. Even at the relatively modest altitude of Everest base camp (5,500 m or 18,045 ft) there have been several helicopter crashes and mishaps caused by the difficult flying conditions.
