On Sunday, August 16th 2020 at 4:08 am, asteroid 2020 QC passed by the Earth at a distance of only 1,830 miles (2,950 kilometers) above the southern Indian Ocean. Measuring approximately 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6 meters) across, this small asteroid is the closest ever asteroid recorded passing Earth. Being so small, it would have been unlikely to pose any threat, but the light show as it hit our atmosphere would have been spectacular.
The asteroid was only recorded in images taken by the Zwicky Transient Facility, a 1.3-meter telescope at the Palomar Observatory in California, a few hours AFTER it made it's closest approach to Earth.
