The shortest operating underground system is the Carmelit, in Haifa, Israel. Opened in 1959, the Carmelit is just 1,800m (1 mile 626ft) long. The only subway/metro in Israel, the Carmelit is a funicular running at a gradient of 12 degrees. Starting at Paris Square, and finishing at Carmel Central, it has six stations.
