Although not the largest mobile machines, the two 2,721 tonne (6 million lb) crawler-transporters used for transporting Space Shuttles to their launch pad at Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, USA, are the largest vehicles used for transporting other objects between two points. Each crawler is 40 m (131 ft) wide and 35 m (114 ft) long and runs on eight giant tank-style tracks. Each of the 57 links or shoes that make up these tracks weighs around 900 kg (2,000 lb).
The crawlers have a top speed of 1.6 km/h (1 mph) loaded, and 3.2 km/h (2 mph) unladen. They were built by the Marion Power Shovel Company (Ohio, USA). They cost $12.3 million each.
