The most extensive tramway network is in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, with 250 km (155.3 miles) of track, 487 trams, 1,763 tram stops and 30 routes including a free City Circle tourist tram.
Following route closure and decline of the previous record holder, St Petersburg, Russia, the most extensive tramway network is now acknowledged to be in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
The system commenced operation with a horse tram line in 1884 with cable lines following shortly after in 1885 and electric cars being tried from 1889 to 1894. In 1906, electric tram operation was re-introduced, which formed the basis of the network. Horse and cable lines were abandoned in 1940 and converted to electric routes or bus services.
The network and number of routes has continued to expand, the longest run being Route 75, 23.2 km (14.4 miles) from Vermont South to City Centre (Spencer Street).
During 2012–13, some 182.7 million passenger journeys were undertaken; Melbourne tramway network is operated by Yarra Trams.
