Zisimopoulos, a police officer, broke the course record of Greek ultra-running legend Yiannis Kouros, whose time of 20 hours 25 minutes had stood since 1984.
First held in 1983, the Spartathlon is a 246 kilometre (153 mile) ultramarathon between Athens and Sparti in Greece. Runners seek to emulate the feat of the Athenian messenger Pheidippides, who was sent to Sparta in 490 BC to seek aid against the Persians for the Battle of Marathon.
