Husband and wife superstars Jay-Z (b. Shawn Carter) and Beyoncé (b. Beyoncé Knowles; both USA) were locked on 88 Grammy nominations apiece after the nominations for the 65th edition of the annual awards ceremony had been announced on 15 November 2022. Jay-Z’s five nods (all unrewarded) and Beyoncé’s nine nominations (four of which she won at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on 5 February 2023) took them clear of Sir Paul McCartney (81 nominations), Quincy Jones (80) and Kanye West (75).

In 2023, Beyoncé became the most decorated individual in Grammys history with 32 wins from her 88 nominations, surpassing the 31 trophies (from 74 nominations) won by conductor/musical director Sir Georg Solti in 1963–98. Jay-Z won 24 Grammys from his 88 nominations in 1999–2022.

The 2023 nominations that forced a tie between music’s most influential couple were: Jay-Z (5) – Album of the Year (as a songwriter on Beyoncé’s Renaissance), Song of the Year (“God Did”, by DJ Khaled feat. Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, John Legend & Fridayy; and as a songwriter on Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul”), Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance (both for “God Did”).

Beyoncé (9) – Album of the Year (Renaissance), Record of the Year and Song of the Year (both for “Break My Soul”), Best Dance/Electronic Album (Renaissance), Best Dance/Electronic Recording (“Break My Soul”), Best R&B Song (“Cuff It”), Best R&B Performance (“Virgo’s Groove”), Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Plastic off the Sofa”) and Best Song Written for Visual Media (“Be Alive”, from the movie King Richard).

Jay-Z’s first three nominations were secured in 1999, winning Best Rap Album for Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life. Beyoncé’s first two nods were in 2000, for Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills”.
