Nicki Minaj (Trinidad & Tobago, b. Onika Maraj) made No.1 for the first time on the US Billboard Hot 100 with her 109th chart entry, “Say So”, on 16 May 2020. The rapper appeared as a featured artist on the remix of Doja Cat’s hit, which surged to No.1 to mark the first female rap duo at the summit of the all-genre chart.

Previously, Justin Bieber held this unenviable record by making it to the top with his 47th entry (“What Do You Mean?” on 19 September 2015), nudging out Taylor Swift, whose “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” – her 46th chart entry – went to No.1 on 1 September 2012.

Minaj took 10 years 86 days to make it to the Hot 100’s top spot, dating back to her debut on 20 February 2010 as featured artist on Lil Wayne’s “Knockout”. “Say So” was Minaj’s 18th Top 10 entry. “Acaconda” (No.2 on 6 September 2014) represented her previous best chart position.

Minaj’s 109 Hot 100 hits – the most by a woman since the chart was inaugurated on 4 August 1958 – ties Elvis Presley’s Hot 100-era hits total (from “Hard Headed Woman” and “Don’t Ask Me Why” on the first Hot 100 chart to “Blue Christmas” on 5 January 2019).

“Say So”, co-written by Dlamini and produced by “Tyson Trax” (aka Lukasz “Dr Luke” Gottwald), was the fifth single to be taken from Los Angeles native Doja Cat’s 2019 album Hot Pink.
