The first person to achieve the Ocean Explorers Grand Slam (row on five oceans) isFiann Paul (Iceland), who rowed across the Atlantic east to west (2011, team of six, on board Sara G); across the Indian Ocean east to west (2014, team of seven, on board Avalon); on the Mid-Pacific route east to west (2016, team of four, on board Danielle); on the Arctic Ocean Open Waters (2017, south to north, team of five; north to south, team of six; on board Polar Row); and on the Southern Ocean (2019, team of six, on board Ohana).


The Ocean Explorers Grand Slam is an adventurer goal to complete open-water crossings on all five oceans using human-powered vessel.

In 2019, Fiann Paul captained the first human-powered transit (by rowing) across the Drake Passage and, in doing so, became the first and only (as of 2020) person to achieve the Ocean Explorers Grand Slam. Completion of this quest took him 9 years.
