Shingo Kunieda (Japan) won his 49th and 50th wheelchair tennis titles at Wimbledon on 9-10 July 2022. First, he and Argentina’s Gustavo Fernández beat home favourites Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid – seeking an 11th consecutive Grand Slam doubles title – 6-3, 6-1 at the All England Club on 9 July. It was Kunieda’s 22nd major title in doubles. The following day at SW19, the 38-year-old Japanese player won his 28th singles title at a Grand Slam tournament, defeating Hewett 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 in an epic encounter that saw the British player serve for the match four times.
In singles, Kunieda has won the Australian Open 11 times (2007-11, 2013-15, 2018, 2020 and 2022), the French Open eight times (2007-10, 2014-15, 2018 and 2022), Wimbledon once (2022) and the US Open eight times (2007, 2009-11, 2014-15 and 2020-21). In doubles, he’s won the Australian Open eight times (2007-11 and 2013-15), the French Open eight times (2008, 2010-13, 2015-16 and 2019), Wimbledon four times (2006, 2013-14 and 2022) and the US Open twice (2007 and 2014). Kunieda has left the competition far behind: when he brought up his half-century of singles and doubles titles at Wimbledon 2022, the next-best tallies at the four majors combined were 23 by Stéphane Houdet (19 in doubles), 21 by Gordon Reid (19 in doubles) and 20 by Alfie Hewett (15 in doubles).
