At the final of the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, USA, on 30 May 2019, an unprecedented eight contestants were announced co-victors. All from the USA, the winners were: 13-year-old Rishik Gandhasri (California), 14-year-old Erin Howard (Alabama), 12-year-old Abhijay Kodali (Texas), 13-year-old Shruthika Padhy (New Jersey), 13-yer-old Rohan Raja (Texas), 13-year-old Christopher Serrao (New Jersey), 13-year-old Sohum Sukhatankar (Texas) and 13-year-old Saketh Sundar (Maryland). The finals week, which commenced on 26 May, started with 562 entrants, eventually whittled down to the final eight.

The co-champions of the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee have been dubbed "the Octochamps". The decision was taken to award the title to all eight after a three-and-a-half-hour battle during which they all successfully completed 20 straight rounds of spelling.

The eight words that secured the champions' success were: auslaut, erysipelas, bougainvillea, aiguillette, pendeloque, palama, cernuous and odylic.

Prior to 2019, the most winners there had ever been at a single event was two – most recently in 2016. That edition also saw the youngest ever winner of the competition: Nihar Janga (USA, b. 18 November 2004) who was named champion aged 11 years 191 days on 26 May 2016, along with 13-year-old Jairam Hathwar.

The National Spelling Bee was established in 1925 by a conglomeration of US newspapers; publishing and broadcasting firm The E W Scripps Company took over sponsorship of the contest in 1941. The competition is held annually, though it was cancelled during the wartime years of 1943–45.
