Bernhard drove around the 20.832-km-long circuit, nicknamed the “Green Hell”, at an average speed of 233.8 km/h (145.3 mph). He took almost a minute off the lap record of 6:11.13, set by Stefan Bellof in a Porsche 956 C on 28 May 1983.
