Highest grossing Broadway musical

The highest-grossing Broadway musical is Disney's The Lion King, which opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre on 13 November 1997. As of 2 November 2025, the show (now staged at the Minskoff Theatre) has earned $2.15 bn (£1.63 bn) at the box office.

This show is based on Disney’s 1994 movie of the same name, adapted for the stage by director Julie Taymor. The Broadway production ran at the New Amsterdam until 2006, when it transferred to the Minskoff Theatre (three blocks to the north) to make way for the new stage adaptation of Mary Poppins.

In addition to the Broadway production, The Lion King has also enjoyed multi-year runs in Toronto (Canada), Hamburg (Germany), Tokyo (Japan), Sydney (Australia) and London (UK), as well as numerous successful touring productions.
