At 42 years and 194 days, David Ayres (Canada, b. August 12, 1977) became the oldest goalie to win his NHL regular-season debut while playing for the Carolina Hurricanes in a 6-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, on February 22, 2020. Ayres entered the game during the second period as the emergency backup goaltender when both Carolina goaltenders, James Reimer and Petr Mrazek, were injured. According to the NHL, Ayres surpassed the previous mark set by Hugh Lehman of the Chicago Blackhawks, who was 41 years and 21 days old when he won his first NHL game during the 1926 season.
