Alabama (USA) are the most decorated group at the American Music Awards (AMAs), with 23 wins between 1983 and 2003. They were named Favourite Duo or Group - Country a record 17 times (1983–96, 1998–99 and 2003).
Only two acts – Taylor Swift (29) and Michael Jackson (26) – have won more times at the AMAs than Alabama. Boyz II Men, with nine wins in 1992–98, are the second-most successful group by the number of awards won.
Alabama’s 14-year streak as the AMAs’ Favourite Country Group was interrupted in 1997 when Brooks & Dunn claimed the first of their five wins in the category. Alabama beat off competition from the likes of The Oak Ridge Boys, The Statler Brothers, The Judds and the Dixie Chicks during their award-winning years, and denied Brooks & Dunn on seven separate occasions between 1993 and 2003.
The group won the Award of Merit in 2003 and three Favourite Country Album accolades in four years in 1984 (The Closer You Get…), 1986 (40-Hour Week) and 1987 (Greatest Hits).
Alabama were formed in Fort Payne, Alabama, in 1969 as Wildcountry, changing their name to match their home state in 1977. The founding members were Randy Owen (lead vocalist/guitarist), Teddy Gentry (bass/backing vocals) and Jeff Cook (lead guitar/backing vocals) and, 50 years on, they remain the mainstays of the act.
The first AMAs were staged at the Earl Carroll Theatre in New York City on 19 February 1974. The 2019 edition was the 47th ceremony (two events were held in 2003, when the AMAs switched from January to November).
