The oldest medallist at an IAAF World Athletics Championships is João Vieira (Portugal, b. 20 February 1976), who won silver in the men’s 50 km race walk aged 43 years 221 days on 28–29 September 2019 in Doha, Qatar.
The race walk began at 23.30 owing to the heat in Doha. Vieira, who finished second behind Japan's Yusuke Suzuki, described the race as “hell”.
