India (27) and South Africa (10) registered 37 sixes in the first match of their 2019 Test series at ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam, India, on 2–6 October. India opener Rohit Sharma’s individual match tally of 13 sixes – six in the first innings and seven in the second innings – broke the Test record of 12, set by Pakistan's Wasim Akram in his 257 not out against Zimbabwe on 19–20 October 1996.

The previous record of 35 was set by Pakistan (13) and New Zealand (22) at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, United Arab Emirates, on 26–30 November 2014 – a four-day match, suspended on 27 November due to the announcement of the death of Australian opener Phillip Hughes, in which New Zealand batted just once.

India’s Mayank Agarwal (6) and Ravinda Jadeja (4) and South Africa’s Dean Elgar (4) also weighed in with maximums in support of Sharma, with the remaining 10 sixes shared between eight different batsmen on both sides.

India won the match by 203 runs after bowling out the visitors for 191 on the fifth and final day.
