The first man to appear on the cover of American Vogue magazine was actor Richard Gere (USA), who was pictured on the front of the November 1992 edition alongside then-wife Cindy Crawford.

Since its first publication in 1892, American Vogue has only ever graced its cover with nine men, none of whom appears on his own without a woman or two by his side: actor George Clooney in June 2000 (with Gisele Bundchen), basketball player Lebron James in April 2008 (also with Bundchen), swimmer Ryan Lochte in June 2012 (with Hope Solo and Serena Williams), Kanye West in April 2014 (with Kim Kardashian), actor Ben Stiller in February 2016 (with Zoolander 2 co-star Penélope Cruz), Olympic decathlete Ashton Eaton in August 2016 (with Gigi Hadid), Zayn Malik in August 2017 (also with Hadid), and Justin Bieber in March 2019 (with Hailey Baldwin).

Males have appeared prior to Gere on the covers of international editions of the magazine – Melchior Gastón "Mel" Ferrer, for example, appeared beside wife Audrey Hepburn on the cover of Paris Vogue in May 1963 and was the first man to appear on any Vogue cover; and for the July 1970 edition of British Vogue, David Bailey photographed the Austrian actor Helmut Berger with actress/model Marisa Berenson.
