The first marathon distance run under two hours was completed by Eliud Kipchoge (Kenya) in 1 hr 59 min 40 sec, at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge, in Vienna, Austria, on 12 October 2019.


The 34 year old Kenyan became the first person to run a marathon distance under 2 hours, he set the time with the help of 42 pacemakers including multiple Olympians such as 1500 metre champion Matthew Centrowitz. Kipchoge ran the marathon distance never once dropping below an average pace of 2 min 52 sec per kilometre, meaning his average 100 metre pace was an incredible 17.08 secs.
