The fastest Travessia do Leme ao Pontal – a 36-kilometre (22.3-mile) marathon swim in the Atlantic Ocean between the districts of Leme and Pontal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – is 7 hours 13 minutes, achieved by Glauco Luís de Oliveira Rangel (Brazil) on 9 October 2018. The swim was ratified by the Leme to Pontal Swimming Association.


Oliveira Rangel is the 18th solo swimmer to complete the crossing, which is renowned for strong swells and ocean currents. In the course of the journey, he endured turbulent water, jellyfish stings and intense rain.

The fastest Leme-Pontal swim while wearing neoprene, meanwhile, is 7 hours 2 minutes, achieved by Thiago Toshio Rebollo (Brazil) on 15 December 2017.

The first person to complete the Travessia do Leme ao Pontal was Luiz Lima (Brazil) in 2008.
