The fastest crossing of the North Minch under British Long Distance Swimming Association regulations is 18 hours 46 minutes from Gob Na Miolaid on the Isle of Lewis to Rubha Reigh, aka Rubha Reidh, on the Scottish mainland – a distance of 44.4 kilometres (24 nautical miles) – achieved by Colleen Blair (UK) on 8 July 2018.

Blair started her swim at 4.49 a.m. under the auspices of the British Long Distance Swimming Association.

Two fellow swimmers – Colin Macleod and Norman Todd – started a bit later at 4.55 a.m., but they were wearing neoprene. Neither Macleod nor Todd were able to complete the crossing: Macleod had to be air-rescued after he became separated from his support boat and Todd decided to end his attempt after his swimming partner went missing.

According to Blair, the water temperature varied between 9°C and 13.8°C (48–56.8°F).
