The longest enclosed pedestrian bridge is 250 metres and was achieved by Metrolinx (Canada), in City of Pickering, Ontario, Canada, on September 2018.
The Pickering Pedestrian Bridge, located approximately 45 minutes east of Toronto, in the City of Pickering, Ontario, Canada was completed in September 2018 after nearly a decade of planning, design, and construction. The bridge spans 14 lanes of highway 401, six live rail tracks, and a two-lane municipal roadway. The bridge, located in Durham Region, is a showcase of both regional and local infrastructure in that it connects the transit agency’s Pickering Station on the south to the region’s largest shopping mall, local college, and regional bus service on the north side.
The bridge's iconic architecture is highlighted at night with close to 300 LED lights, giving its organic shape a beautiful, soft glow. The bridge has been featured in a number of publications and received the City of Pickering's 2019 Urban Design Award. In addition, following a worldwide competition Metrolinx also received the 2019 Engineering News Record (ENR) Global Best Projects Award in the tunnel/bridge category for the Pickering Pedestrian Bridge.
