Rafael Nadal (Spain) won his 14th French Open singles title on 5 June 2022, defeating Norway’s Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 in the final on Court Philippe-Chatrier in Paris. Nadal, 36, had previously been crowned French Open champion in 2005-08, 2010-14 and 2017-20. No other player – male or female – has won one of tennis’ four Grand Slam singles tournaments more than 11 times (nine times since the open era began in 1968).

Nadal has won all 14 of the finals he’s contested at the French Open and has accumulated 112 wins (from 115 matches in total) since making his debut there in 2005. Other multiple single-event Grand Slam winners include Margaret Court (11 titles at the Australian Open), Max Decugis (8 titles at the French Open), Molla Mallory (8 titles at the US Open), Martina Navratilova (9 titles at Wimbledon), Helen Wills Moody (8 titles at Wimbledon), Roger Federer (8 titles at Wimbledon) and Novak Djokovic (9 titles at the Australian Open). Nadal’s 2022 triumph came 17 years to the day after claiming his first title in Paris, against Argentina’s Mariano Puerta on 5 June 2005. Nadal had 92 ATP Tour-level titles to his name after his victory at the French Open. Jimmy Connors (109), Federer (103) and Ivan Lendl (94) are the three men out in front. At 36 years 2 days old, Nadal (b. 3 June 1986) became the oldest men’s singles champion at the French Open, surpassing Spain’s Andrés Gimeno (b. 3 August 1937), who was 34 years 306 days old on 4 June 1972.
