The first LEGO® stop motion brickfilm is "En rejse til månen" ("Journey to the Moon"), and was created by Lars C. and Henrik Hassing (both Denmark) in Svenstrup, Denmark, on 16 May 1973.

Lars and Henrik spent hours building with LEGO as kids and for their grandparents golden wedding anniversary, gifted them with a stop motion film about a journey to the moon. They filmed the entire project on super-8. At the time, LEGO® sets were not themed and mini figures did not exist. Lars and Henrik had to think outside the box to make their project a reality. Little did they know their fun project would become widely regarded as the first documented brickfilm. This was the start of an era, the brickfilm community was born and 40 odd years later would inspire LEGO® to make "The LEGO® Movie".

After receiving the gift, Lars and Henrik's grandparents were so impressed they sent the film to the LEGO group. The managing director, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, wrote a letter to their grandparents, inviting them all to the LEGO's headquarter in Billund, Denmark. After their factory tour, they were sent home with large boxes of LEGO® pieces.
