Squid Game (Netflix, USA; 2021) provided the most popular debut for a TV series in 2021-22, according to data science firm Parrot Analytics, with a global demand rating 84.4 times greater than that of the average TV show. The nine-part survival thriller, which stars Lee Jung-jae as lead character Seong Gi-hun, was created by South Korean filmmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk and proved an immediate hit with viewers, reaching the No.1 position in 97 territories. Its plot sees 456 contestants risk their lives in a series of childhood games for 45.6 bn won ($38.8 m; £28.1 m) in prize money.
The data for this record, which covers the period 1 January 2021 to 21 February 2022, is based on demand during the 30-day period after the show's premiere. A sequel to the original series is being discussed, as of March 2022, .
