Claire Lomas (UK) finished the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon wearing a bionic suit in eight days from 8 to 15 April 2018. The ReWalk robotic suit enabled Lomas, a paraplegic after a riding accident, to cut nine days from her previous fastest time, set five years previously at the London Marathon. The exoskeleton functions by detecting subtle shifts in the user's balance and then initiating forward steps.
Claire is paralysed from the chest down and was inspired to beat her own marathon record in order to raise funds for the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation. She battled through rain – and slippery surfaces – for most of her attempt, but was buoyed by hundreds of well-wishers who came to cheer her on.
