Professor Steve Mann from Toronto, Canada, first created a wearable eyeglass camera in 1980. The device functioned as both a camera and an optical display, overlaying graphics in front of the wearer's eyes. The first prototype was powered by a computer carried in a backpack, and since its inception Mann has created several improved versions of the "digital eye glass", and still wears one. Worn like a pair of glasses, the device records whatever the wearer is looking at using a camera, and then processes the footage and plays it back to the wearer via a tiny screen in front of the eyes.
Mann has also created gesture-based wearable computers.
