The most Academy Awards won by a superhero movie is three by Black Panther (USA, 2018), directed by Kevin Feige and based on characters created by Marvel's Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Nominated in seven categories, the movie secured wins for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, aka Best Original Score (Ludwig Göransson), Best Achievement in Costume Design (Ruth E Carter) and Best Achievement in Production Design (Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart).


The nominations were announced on 22 January 2019, and the ceremony was staged on 24 February at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB.com), Hannah Beachler is the first African American to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Production Design.

Black Panther overtook the two awards each won by The Dark Knight (USA, 2008) for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Heath Ledger) and Best Achievement in Sound Editing (Richard King) and The Incredibles (USA, 2004) for Best Achievement in Sound Editing (Michael Silvers and Randy Thom) and Best Animated Feature Film of the Year (Brad Bird). It also gave Marvel Studios its first Oscar win.
