Originally announced in May 2001, during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Kingdom Hearts became the first RPG set in the Disney universe, resulting from an unprecedented collaboration between Japanese developer Square Enix and Disney Interactive. Kingdom Hearts’ core attraction was that characters designed by Square’s prominent artist Tetsuya Nomura would share adventures with timeless heroes and villains from the Disney’s halls of fame. Square’s lead protagonist Sora joined forces with Goofy, Donald Duck and, of course, King Mickey Mouse. The first game was released for PlayStation 2 in March 2002.
