On 4 March 2018, self-professed ‘Reverse Engineer, Hacker, Gamer’, “DriftItem” became the first person to access network data in the original Dark Souls (From Software, 2011) game on PC and convert thousands of bloodstain and soapstone message locations into maps that plot precisely where players have died or left messages across many notorious Dark Souls levels, including Anor Londo and Blighttown.
In Dark Souls games, the Chosen Undead dies. A lot. And now you can see exactly where he or she meets her fate the most, thanks to player death maps created by “DriftItem”. Not only does this provide a visual reference for where the Chosen Undead most commonly meets his or her fate, but, claims “DriftItem”, it also helps preserve the original Dark Souls data for posterity, in light of the release of the remastered version in May 2018.
Direct quote from “DriftItem”: “I'm collecting the data with a custom game client I wrote. Data preservation is one of my goals. DS1 multiplayer data isn't stored on a central server but traded between clients. Once the DS1 remaster comes out and player number go down, a lot of data would get lost for ever.”
