China launched the world’s first quantum satellite on 16 August 2016. The Quantum Experiments at Space Scale (QUESS) satellite, which lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gobi Desert of China at 1:40 a.m. local time, successfully entered orbit at an altitude of 500 kilometres.

The satellite is both an extreme test of the weird properties of quantum mechanics, and a technology testbed for what could be the start of a global, unhackable communications network.
