According to data collected by professional services firm KPMG in 2018, the country with the highest sales tax (or Value Added Tax) is Hungary, which puts a 27% tax on the sale of most goods.
The 27% rate is the standard level for consumer goods, but some classes of items are taxed at lower levels. Fresh dairy and bakery products, along with some tourism-related services are taxed at 18% while medical supplies, printed material and many food items are taxed at 5%.
