The building with the darkest exterior ever constructed was the 10-m-high (32-ft 10-in) Hyundai pavilion, a temporary structure that opened to the public on 9 February 2018 at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. Designed by British architect Asif Khan, the outside of the pavilion was sprayed with Vantablack Vbx2, an ultra-black coating with a total hemispherical reflectance (THR) of 1% at 600 nanometres (visible spectrum). The building absorbs 99% of light and so creates the illusion of a void.
Formed from vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays, Vantablack was developed by Surrey NanoSystems to reduce atmospheric distortion in space telescopes and to eliminate light refraction from lenses. It was the former holder of the record for darkest manmade substance.
