The best-selling game starring a solo female lead protagonist is Horizon Zero Dawn (Sony, 2017), which, as of 16 April 2023, had sold 24.3 million units across all platforms. The main character, Aloy, is a machine hunter created by GAIA, the governing artificial intelligence of Project Zero Dawn. She is regarded for her skills, strength, and compassion.
Aloy is also the protagonist in Horizon Forbidden West (Sony, 2022), the franchise's second game, which has sold over 8.4 million units.
Together, the first two Horizon games have sold more than 32.7 million units worldwide. Millions more people have played them through PlayStation subscriptions too, including PS Plus and Play at Home, Sony’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
