Until the 2015/2016 winter climbing season, Nanga Parbat (8,125 m; 26,656 ft), the ninth highest mountain in the world, was the second highest unclimbed mountain in winter, both calendar (20 December to 20 March) and meteorological (1 December to 28 February), and had seen 31 unsuccessful winter climbing attempts. However, at 3:17 p.m. 26 February 2016, a team consisting of Ali Sadpara (Pakistan), Alex Txikon (Spain), and Simone Moro (Italy) successfully stood on top of the mountain, achieving one of the most long-awaited firsts in mountaineering. A fourth team member, Tamara Lunger (Italy), stopped just short of the summit due to extreme fatigue.
The highest unclimbed mountain in winter is K2 (8,611 m; 28,251 ft).
