Gora Podeba (or Pik Pobeda), a 3,003-m (9,852-ft) mountain in the Chersky Range that runs in northeastern Siberia through the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) and Magadan Oblast, Russia, is not only the highest mountain in Siberia’s Arctic Circle, but it also one of the coldest places on the planet. On 11 February 2018, Simone Moro and Tamara Lunger (both Italy) successfully overcame the harsh environment and extreme temperatures, which reportedly dropped to -40°C (-40°F) during the climb, and reached the summit of Gora Podeba, marking the mountain's first winter ascent.

The coldest inhabited place is the village of Oymyakon, also in the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic of Russia, where temperatures of -67.7°C (-90°F) were recorded on 6 February 1933.
