On 20th October 2018 during a qualifying round of the Classic Tetris World Championship, Portland Retro Gaming Expo, Portland, Oregon, USA, the USA's Joseph Saelee became the first player to reach level 30 during a live match of Tetris in the tournament's history. This was achieved using the NES version of Tetris, first released in 1989. Joseph went on to lift the trophy, beating Jonas Neubauer in the final.
